Jeff Burton to Deliver Commencement Address at Cannon School

The Cannon School community is invited to attend the Commencement Ceremony for the Class of 2014 on Friday, May 23 at 9:00 a.m. on Cannon School’s lawn.

Cannon School is pleased to announce that Jeff Burton, NASCAR Driver, NBC Sports Analyst, and Cannon parent, will deliver the commencement address.

Jeff Burton
Mr. Burton’s distinguished career began at age seven when he raced go karts in his hometown of South Boston, VA and claimed the Virginia state championship. At the age of sixteen, he drove his first stock car race and won. Climbing his way through the late model ranks in Virginia, he made his NASCAR Nationwide Series debut in 1988.

Mr. Burton earned his first NASCAR Nationwide Series victory in 1990 and made his first career Sprint Cup Series start in 1993. He was named the 1994 Sprint Cup Series Rookie of the Year and clinched his first Sprint Cup Series win in 1997. His career highlights include twenty-seven Nationwide Series wins, one International Race of Champions win, and twenty-one Sprint Cup wins. As one of only six drivers to have competed in more than 1,000 NASCAR events, Mr. Burton has been deemed “the Mayor” in racing circles for his intelligent comments to the media and his balanced thoughts on how to improve the racing product.

After twenty full-time racing seasons known for his character both on and off the track, Mr. Jeff Burton looks forward to shifting gears as the head analyst with NBC Sports for NASCAR broadcasts for the 2015-2018 seasons.

Mr. Burton has been married to his wife, Kim, for twenty-two years. His daughter, Paige ’14, and son, Harrison ’19, have attended Cannon School since kindergarten and junior-kindergarten, respectively. Mr. and Mrs. Burton served as the campaign chairs of Cannon’s $7.1 million Building Bright Futures Capital Campaign, and Mr. Burton is a member of Cannon’s Board of Visitors. When he is not on the race track, in the television studio, or volunteering, Mr. Burton can be found attending Kim and Paige’s equestrian events or building late model race cars with Harrison.

We hope you will join us at Cannon School’s thirteenth Commencement Ceremony to celebrate the Class of 2014!
