Some of the region’s top independent high school basketball prospects are coming to Cannon School November 22-23 to compete in the sixteenth annual Cannon Classic. Cannon School, Durham Academy, Hickory Grove Christian, and Queens Grant High School teams will face off in Boswell Gym over two days of boys and girls hoops action.
The tournament tips off at 3:30 p.m. on Friday when Durham Academy faces Hickory Grove Christian in girls’ varsity competition. Their boys’ teams take the court at 5:00 p.m. Cannon girls’ varsity plays Queens Grant at 6:30 p.m., followed by the boys’ game at 8:00 p.m.
Championship and consolation games will be played on Saturday.
Cannon’s boys’ varsity Cougars are led by Philip Jewell, a 6-foot-5 senior who broke a school record with eight 3-point field goals on November 9 and earned all-conference honors last year. So far this year he has averaged 22.5 points and 4 rebounds per game. Other players to watch are seniors Lucas Anderson, who also earned all-conference honors last year, Jonathan Green, and Grant Gossage.
Cannon girls’ varsity is led by Niina Mattila, a junior who has averaged 11 points and 6 rebounds per game, returning seniors Ellen Montgomery and Reed Harmon, and junior Caitlin Brewer.
All games are open to the public. Admission is $5.00 per day for adults and $3.00 for students. Children 8 years and under will be admitted free.
