Patrick Moyer has been named the new athletic director at Cannon School. He takes the helm of Cannon’s program on June 7 as another step in his longstanding relationship with the school.
Moyer is the parent of a Cannon School graduate and was the founding coach of the school’s varsity softball program. The softball team made the final four in 2010 and won the state championship in 2011. Moyer joins Cannon School’s administration after serving more than a decade as a professor of physics at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNCC). Along with being an award-winning professor, he has during his tenure at UNCC, chaired the physics department, the undergraduate curriculum committee, the review, promotion and tenure committee, and served as a member of the chancellor’s committee on NCAA athletics.
“I have seen firsthand the passionate commitment that all of the people involved with Cannon School make towards creating the excellent and challenging education that its students experience,” said Moyer. “To have the opportunity to combine two of my passions—education and athletics—in a community that I have long admired and respected is an honor, and I’m excited to get started.”
“For over a decade, Pat has been an advocate of our student-athletes, Cannon athletics, and our mission,” said Matt Gossage, Cannon’s head of school. “Pat impressed coaches, the administrative team, trustees and the search committee with his life-maxim of investing in people and his track record of leading groups of people in creating something special together. We will reach new levels of competitive excellence under Pat’s leadership.”
Moyer will guide all aspects of Cannon’s athletic program, including philosophy and goals, hiring and evaluation, scheduling, transportation and facilities management.
Moyer received a bachelor’s degree in physics from Moravian College in 1986, a master’s degree in physics from Saint Bonaventure University in 1988, and a doctorate in physics from North Carolina State University in 1993.
