Cannon School repeated as NCISAA girls golf champions, winning by 26 shots over second-place, Durham Academy at Mid Pines Golf Club in Pinehurst.
The Cougars, led by first-year coach Pat Whisenant, a lifetime PGA professional (who now works for Titleist), shot a combined 249 with junior Kate Collom and sophomore Anna Redding leading the way with 82s (tied for 2nd), while sophomore Annie Collom shot 85 and her classmate Taylor Bunten posted a 94.
Both Colloms (sisters) and Redding were named to the NCISAA all-state team.
“It’s been a real honor to be a part of this run and these girls, who are great players and people,” Whisenant said. “They lifted each other up when they weren’t putting well today and pulled it together for (another) state championship.”
Cannon was equally as impressive this year in their title, as the Cougars won by 22 shots last season. The Cougars have beaten 25 of their last 26 opponents in the two-year span, with their only loss on the course being Oct. 17 to defending 2A state champion, Salisbury (2011).
