Cannon’s Middle School football team opened the 2012 season with its first conference win Thursday night with a 26-20 victory over Charlotte Christian, the defending champion of the Charlotte Independent Schools Athletic Association Conference.

Cougars celebrate after big win at Charlotte Christian

Head coach Ron Turner said the teams battled from the beginning, with Cannon scoring the first touchdown even after losing starting quarterback Bryce Estes, an eighth-grader, to a broken foot. Eighth-grader Tim Bunten came in as backup and led the Cougars’ offense for the rest of the game.

According to Turner, another highlight of the matchup came late in the fourth quarter, with the score tied 20-20. “Our defense caused a turnover with about five minutes left,” Turner said. Eighth-grader Dalton Phillips scored the game-winning touchdown with just 36 seconds left in the game.

“It was a classic dogfight back and forth,” Turner said. “We found a way to win, and we wanted to win more than they did.”
