Varsity softball battled their way to an excellent road win against 4-time defending 3A state champion Hickory Grove. The win represents one of the best wins in Cannon varsity softball history. The two and half hour marathon ended with the Cougars prevailing 11-9 in a mentally and physically exhausting game for both teams (and coaches). Players for both teams showed incredible mental toughness and every out was a battle in this game. Courtney Reynolds, Stephanie Gray, Emma Virtanen, and Kenzie Moyer led the offensive charge as each had multiple hits on the day against a very good Hickory Grove pitcher. But it was such an incredible team effort that led to the victory for Cannon. Every single player contributed in huge ways to the win. Excellent battles at the plate by Allie Gray, Ally Reynolds, Julie Harriss, Olivia Osborne, Haley Foreman, Becca Milroy, and Reed Harmon were all instrumental in the game. The defensive outfield play of Jessica Randolph and Emma Virtanen played a big part in holding Hickory Grove runners from advancing in many cases, and the infield of Courtney Reynolds, Allie Gray, Ally Reynolds, and Steph Gray all made great defensive plays throughout the game. Finally, Kenzie Moyer raised her season record to 5-2 as she battled on the mound to earn the victory in a game in which she threw about 150 pitches.
